The Xinsong Converter Station in Dali has an altitude of 2,350 meters and is the highest UHV converter station in the world. The Xinsong Converter Station is located in the earthquake-prone area, which puts higher requirements on the mechanical performance of electrical equipment. For this reason, ABB has designed the products to meet the demanding seismic requirements.
Relying on abundant hydropower resources, Southwest China is passing a series of large-scale power transmission projects to continuously supply clean electricity to the southern power load center. The 800 kV Northwest-Guangdong UHV DC transmission project built by China Southern Power Grid Corporation was fully operational in May this year. The project starts from Dali Prefecture in Yunnan Province in the west and Shenzhen City in Guangdong Province in the east. It is the first in West Power Transmission. UHV DC project settled in Shenzhen.
ABB provided key power equipment such as tank circuit breakers, column circuit breakers, DC capacitors and transformer bushings for the project, which were installed in Yunnan Xinsong Converter Station and Guangdong Dongfang Converter Station. The northwest-Guangdong project has a transmission capacity of 5,000 megawatts and a total length of more than 1,950 kilometers. After the project is put into operation, it will help the Pearl River Delta region to reduce coal consumption by 6 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by 16 million tons per year, equivalent to 16 million hectares of afforestation.
