IEA and IRENA Call for Policy Reforms to Enable Clean AI Infrastructure
At a Paris roundtable hosted by the IEA, global institutions called for clearer regulations and scalable tools, like PPAs and green tariffs, to accelerate clean energy adoption for AI infrastructure.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have jointly emphasized the need for targeted policy reforms to meet rising clean energy needs from AI infrastructure.
Both agencies have called on governments to adopt procurement mechanisms like corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) and green tariffs. These tools allow data centers and other energy-intensive users to directly source renewable electricity.
IRENA’s latest report noted Asia’s strong share in global renewables growth, but warned of persistent investment gaps. The IEA echoed these concerns, linking them to the electricity demands of expanding AI infrastructure.
In addition to regulatory clarity, both agencies are encouraging broader international cooperation and climate finance programs to support emerging markets. Their recommendations focus on aligning digital growth with sustainability objectives.
