Microgrids: A Cornerstone of Asia’s Grid Modernization
A battery energy storage system (BESS) installation in Vietnam, the region’s fastest-growing energy market, is part of ENABLE – a joint program by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) to accelerate BESS adoption through dedicated funding and technical support.
AI-enabled microgrids are emerging as essential tools for Southeast Asia’s energy future, from powering industrial hubs to electrifying remote islands. Backed by advances in AI-enabled energy systems, these decentralized models are being deployed at scale and will feature prominently at the AI, Climate & Energy Summit Asia.
Vietnam: Industry looks to microgrids
Vietnam’s fast-growing electronics and EV sectors face frequent power shortages. To keep production stable, industrial estates are deploying AI-integrated microgrids that provide reliable, on-site energy. The government’s Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8) underscores this strategy, targeting a 33–54x increase in battery storage by 2030 and stronger interoperability standards for smart grids.
Philippines: Expanding electrification access
The Philippines is using microgrids to extend power to unserved and underserved areas. Backed by the Microgrid Systems Act, private firms can now bypass the costly extension of main transmission lines. The Department of Energy has also launched programs that integrate AI-based microgrids into rural electrification, a move expected to improve reliability across island provinces.
Taiwan: Resilience as national security
Taiwan has committed NT$564.5 billion ($19.2 billion) to grid modernization, with a target of 20 GWh of storage by 2030. For an economy centered on semiconductor manufacturing, microgrids are not just an efficiency tool but a critical national security measure against both natural and geopolitical disruptions.
