Microsoft Launches Malaysia West Cloud Region
Microsoft outlines its largest-ever Malaysia investment, combining AI infrastructure, cloud services, and skills development as part of a long-term regional strategy.
Microsoft Corp. launched its first cloud region in Malaysia, known as Malaysia West, on May 28, 2025. The development is part of a broader US$2.2 billion investment into Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence economy.
Located in Greater Kuala Lumpur, the new cloud region provides local organizations access to Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 services with data residency compliance, a key consideration in regulated industries. Microsoft projects that the Malaysia West region will help generate US$10.9 billion in revenue across its ecosystem by 2028 and support over 37,500 direct and indirect jobs.
Microsoft has also emphasized AI orchestration as a core strategic priority, with solutions such as the Azure AI Foundry aiming to streamline enterprise adoption. The new region supports Microsoft’s broader effort to make scalable, secure, and enterprise-grade AI services more accessible to businesses in Southeast Asia.
The launch reinforces Malaysia’s role in regional digital infrastructure expansion and aligns with broader initiatives to strengthen sovereign cloud and AI capabilities across APAC.
