IAEA Holds SMR Workshop in Bangkok to Support Regional Readiness
The IAEA brings its SMR School program to Southeast Asia this July, equipping regional stakeholders with tools for licensing, siting, and workforce strategy.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will host a regional workshop on small modular reactor (SMR) development in Bangkok from July 21 to 25, 2025. The event is part of the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Program to build Southeast Asia’s readiness for next-generation nuclear deployment.
Participants will include government officials, energy regulators, and technical experts from countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. The workshop will cover licensing frameworks, environmental assessments, risk management, and emergency preparedness.
IAEA experts will also lead sessions on human capital development, lifecycle planning, and engagement strategies for working with SMR vendors. The workshop supports a broader regional roadmap to prepare member states for SMR integration into national energy strategies.
This initiative aligns with the growing demand for low-carbon, distributed energy solutions and reflects broader regional efforts to expand nuclear capacity in line with decarbonization targets.
