Tools and Training Drive Momentum for Nuclear Deployment in Asia
The Philippines’ NEP-IAC’s Nuclear 101 sessions go beyond awareness – they’re part of a broader capacity-building push across Asia. As more governments pursue nuclear options, technical literacy and public engagement are becoming cornerstones of project credibility.
With nuclear energy gaining momentum in Asia’s decarbonization strategies, new initiatives focused on transparency, training, and technical readiness are helping countries lay the groundwork for safe and timely deployment.
On July 16, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) released an updated interactive SMR Dashboard tracking 127 reactor designs globally. The dashboard provides granular insights into licensing progress, supply chain readiness, siting, and fuel management – serving as a decision-making tool for governments, investors, and EPC firms.
Meanwhile, the Philippines’ Department of Energy launched its “Nuclear 101” series in late June, targeting local media and stakeholders in regions under consideration for future projects. The program includes technical briefings and site visits, such as to the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, to increase public understanding and build workforce pipelines. These sessions align with the Philippine Nuclear Energy Program and reflect broader IAEA guidance on stakeholder engagement.
International support is also expanding. During a July 25 visit to Singapore, IAEA Director General Grossi highlighted the city-state’s readiness to host nuclear technology, citing strong regulatory frameworks and technical expertise. Singapore and the IAEA renewed their partnership for regional training programs, further bolstering nuclear workforce development in Southeast Asia.
These efforts collectively reflect an ecosystem-wide push to reduce project delays, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster informed public discourse. In an era where energy strategy intersects with AI, digital infrastructure, and climate policy, such readiness measures are critical to accelerating nuclear’s role in Asia’s clean energy transition.
