Google Cloud Balances AI Growth with Emission Cuts in Latest Environmental Report
Google breaks ground on its first data center and cloud region in Malaysia, strengthening its green compute footprint across Southeast Asia.
On June 27, 2025, Google Cloud released its 10th Annual Environmental Report, detailing a 12% reduction in data center emissions despite a 27% rise in electricity demand driven by AI workloads. The report underscores Google’s progress toward operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy.
The report attributes gains to expanded use of renewable energy, deployment of liquid cooling systems, and optimized use of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Urs Hölzle, SVP Technical Infrastructure, noted that Google’s carbon-aware scheduling and green data procurement have enabled emissions cuts without throttling compute availability.
In APAC, green builds in Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan are central to this strategy, in alignment with regional sustainability targets supported by local governments and energy regulators.
The report has drawn interest from infrastructure leaders, including Equinix, ST Telemedia, and Digital Realty, as they assess paths to net-zero while scaling AI services.
