Thailand Advances Smart Grid Development Through National AI Strategy
Thailand’s National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) presenting updates on the implementation of the National AI Strategy, which now includes energy sector priorities such as smart grids.
The Thai government is advancing its National AI Action Plan by incorporating smart grid upgrades and AI deployment across utility networks. The plan is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to become a regional AI hub by 2027.
The action plan, first introduced in 2022, was expanded in June 2025 to include targeted initiatives for the energy sector. These initiatives focus on digital infrastructure, ethical AI use, and workforce development, including the training of AI professionals and users.
Energy-related components of the plan emphasize investment in cloud computing, GPU-based processing, and advanced grid technologies. These elements are intended to support increased electricity demand driven by AI data centers and other digital applications.
The plan also supports cross-sector collaboration among government agencies, utilities, academia, and private companies. Utilities such as EGAT and PTT are expected to play central roles in implementing AI technologies across grid systems and energy management platforms.
Thailand’s efforts aim to modernize its power infrastructure while aligning with long-term sustainability goals and energy security.
